Pele, She Who Makes the Land

Feminine power has been dismissed and crushed for thousands of years. Today women struggle to claim rights, freedom, and their place in the world. The feminine was once revered. Female deities were a significant part of religion and worship in ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Most current religions dismiss ancient beliefs that honored goddesses as cults, and myths, but their ancient stories are are still told today, thousands of years later. My current project is interpreting them with paint on canvas. Here I offer Pele, she comforts me because she is more powerful than any war machine. She takes up space with no apology. She is the birth-mother of the land, and cannot be dismissed.
