Consenses Interview with Sally Taylor:
What was your mood the day you got this picture? Coming out of a low spot.. things not having been light and fluffy, winter blues just barely thinking about letting me loose.
What were you feeling about the task of creating a song from an image? Up for it!
What was your first thought or gut reaction to seeing this picture? “Oh no! this looks a bit like the territory i was happy to be departing from.”
What thought/sound/memory/lyric came first? Chorus, which is the sound of an exhale of my own exasperation.
Was there anything specific in the image you were drawn too? The great contrast of dark and light, of frozen and not frozen water.
What story did the photograph tell you? It reminded me that water can act so differently, yet still be the same basic things. reminded me of the two facets of spiritual and earthly expression that I am with my beloved.
How did you use the image to create this song? It began to come up (with my ‘take’ on its metaphor for my relation to my life with Chris) each time I thought of the seeming predicament I was in with.
What was your process from getting the photo to the completed song? It took a long walk in my childhood neighborhood at night to come to myself with the interpretation.
What does your song mean to you? Its a bit of a gripe! It was relating the discomfort with my life at the time with my situation of where I live and with who…
