What made you want to participate in this project? It sounding very unique, I liked the idea of collaborating in a sequence of various mediums and talents. I conceptualized a thread running through us all
Without going back to the art I sent you what do you remember about it? There was a sense of longing, searching for perhaps purpose that I remember.
What was your first reaction to the art? (thoughts, emotions, memories, tastes, smells etc?) a weight but also a weightlessness, made me want to arrive at some decision I had been yearning to answer. A sense of place, a familiar place inside ourselves that we must go in order to learn through our inherent sufferings.
If you had to choose one word to sum up the art I sent what would it be? Waiting
What emotion did it elicit? Longing and discovery, weakness and strength. Awareness. heart ache.
What was the art about in your mind? (Did it tell a story? Paint a picture? Etc.) It had a very distinctive moody tone that I wanted to convey and elaborate on. The tone being dark, intimate. A feeling of both being inside and outside.
Take me through each step of your process from getting the art to the creation of your work. I simply played the song over and over until I got a feel for what I wanted to communicate through his words and melody.
What did you title your work and why? “Compass” the stars are often used for navigation, to find your way home. The chair is symbolic of home and waiting to return.
What part of your work came to you first? The idea of painting on a circle was my immediate response. This song felt circular, like you were going to arrive back at the same place where you started from.
How do you normally create? How was this experience different? It was different in the sense that I was applying paint with an intention of my personal feeling based on someone else’s feelings, I was interpreting the musician song along with my own. The painting results in the joining of the two.
What techniques/tools did you use to help you express you’re interpretation? Transparency between paint layers, gives depth and dimension. Wire and piano weights also create another layer, giving the piece a tactile dimension.
Are there certain choices you made which mean something specific to you that the observer might not know? Yes, the wire strings are a symbol to represent an instrument, a guitar. The dangling piano weights are to elicit the element of time, like a pendulum, but maintaining that same vertical line feel as the wires
Extra credit: Did you enjoy this project? More you want to say about your experience? I really look forward to seeing the creation as a whole and meeting many of the people who have participated. I have felt an overall sense of unity from the concept and process- a kind of family, continuum and bound.
