What made you want to participate in this project? I have participated in Mail Art projects in the past and enjoyed responding to the challenge of interpreting another person’s work. This project had similar qualities but with broader subject matters and I was curious to see what I would receive for inspiration material.
Without going back to the art I sent you what of it do you remember? The video I was sent had a dream quality that I interpreted as a fairy tale.
What was your first reaction to the art? (thoughts, emotions, memories, tastes, smells etc?) The video felt like bits of ideas with a linear story progression – so I read it as notes for an idea, which I was tasked to translate.
If you had to choose one word to sum up the art I sent what would it be? Interesting
What emotion did it elicit? Curiosity
What was the art about in your mind? (Did it tell a story? Paint a picture? Etc.) I felt very narrative; like a fairy tale, fable, or a modernization of a Greek myth.
Take me through each step of your process from getting the art to the creation of your work. I looked at the video a number of times – making sure I was really seeing it. I studied it frame by frame to really look at the background and the objects. I tried to capture the tone and hold on to the dream quality . My first idea was a message in a bottle using all the writing I had done, then I made shoes out of imaginary maps – but both those ideas were too complicated so I went back to the story and settled on the bowl on wheels – like a crazy dream that makes sense but is a little off.
What did you title your work and why? It is the first line of the writing, and it’s about finding ways to extract oneself from situations and really finding release. I imagined that is how the character in the video would have spent his time – daydreaming he was somewhere else.
What part of your work came to you first? The first impression that the video was a piece of a dream
How do you normally create? How was this experience different? I followed my normal routine as outlined in #7– though was more focused as I really tried to create something that I could make within the time constraints on one week. This in turn dictated the kind of materials I could use. But that isn’t a limitation it is more a result of the criteria of the project.
