According to Scientific American, There is now some evidence to support the hypothesis that terror actually makes Art more Sublime. I believe art is, in itself sort of terrifying. Most of the day we go through life categorizing things into black and white piles with corresponding levels of safety or threat to our survival. Art is one of those things we can’t automatically put into a bucket. We have to take some time and effort with art to decide what it means and then, once we’ve decided what it means to us we THEN have to determine whether it’s safe or not. Both of these processes can be scary and so it’s interesting to see scientifically that being terrified BEFORE an art experience triggers a more sublime experience.
